Permitted: These day care
services have a current and valid permit to operate a child care
service from the New York City Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene.
Permit Status
Expired-in-Renewal: These
child care services have had a permit to operate that has expired
before the child care service has completed the renewal process.
Child care services may continue to operate for a short period of
time while in this status.
Violation Types
Inspections/Visits: The
Bureau of Child Care conducts two types of oversight activities for
group child care services in New York City. Inspections conducted by
Public Health Sanitarians (PHS) focus primarily on facility health
and safety. Early Childhood Educational Consultants (ECEC) conduct
visits to child care services that focus on program development,
staff qualifications and staff and child medical records. In some
instances, the same violations may be cited by these two staff
groups.
Violation Types
Critical Violations: While
these violations do not pose an imminent risk to the health and
safety of children, they are serious and must be corrected by the
provider within two weeks. The Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene (DOHMH) will conduct a compliance visit to assure these
violations have been corrected.
Violation Types
General Violations: These
are violations that do not pose a direct threat to children but must
be corrected within a month by the day care provider to assure the
optimal functioning of the child care service. Child care services
are expected to correct all violations. The Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene does not perform compliance inspections to determine
if violations were corrected when there are no critical violations
and fewer that six general violations observed at the time of an
inspection.
Violation Types
Public Health Hazards: The
most serious type of violations, which may present an imminent
threat to the health and safety of children. These violations must
be immediately addressed and must be corrected within one business
day by the child care provider. The Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene (DOHMH) will conduct a compliance visit to assure these
violations have been corrected.
